Welcome!
I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you and I’m looking forward to a fantastic year together. Through skill building, problem-solving, and collaboration we will grow in our mathematical thinking and better develop our skills as learners.
Overview
This course is aligned with the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for Mathematics. Geometry uses logical reasoning, measurement, and geometric construction to investigate the special relationships of lines, angles, triangles, circles and polygons. Through these relationships, we will investigate congruence and similarities of triangles, area and volume, the Pythagorean Theorem, geometric proofs and the basics of trigonometry. Students will study and demonstrate knowledge of the properties of circles, polygons, similar and congruent figures, lines, angles, and planes. Students will construct and judge the validity of logical arguments. Students will use geometric tools and technology. They will calculate length, area, and volume and demonstrate an understanding of transformations and symmetry. Algebraic skills are continuously reviewed and strengthened through geometric applications and problem solving.
Expectations
It is expected every day that you come to class prepared and you enter the class with a great attitude and on your very best behavior. I expect this from you in the class – every day. I do not have a lot of class rules to follow. But I do ask that you do the following – every day:
1. Show respect to everyone.
2. Have paper and pencils.
3. Organize your work. Keep it organized.
4. Understand “actions/consequences”
Please never cheat – or be dishonest with me or others in the class. These actions will be met with severe consequences – so let’s just not go there!
What you need for this class everyday
1. Please bring to class your calculator – every day.
For this class you need at least a TI-84.
2. Please have a math notebook to keep your notes and papers.
3. Pencils and paper (NO PENS!).
Assessments
Students will have assessments every week.
Homework will be checked for completion unless directions state the assignment is for accuracy.
Students should expect a quiz or test every week.
Students should also expect to have a midterm and end of year exam.
All assessments will be weighted appropriately. For example: homework will be weighted 10-20 points; quizzes will be weighted 20-50 points; most tests will be weighted 100 points.
Calculation of Grades: Grades are recorded based on total points. To calculate the student’s grade, actual points will be divided by total points. For example, if there is a total of 1000 points and the student has earned 800 points, the student’s grade will be calculated by dividing 800 by 1000.
Grading Scale: 100-90 A/ 89-80 B/ 79-70 C/ 69-60 D/ 59-0 F
Semester Exams*
Each semester will conclude with a cumulative semester exam. This exam will count as 20% of your semester grade.
*Dependent upon exam schedule as required by the State Department of Education.
Peer Tutoring
Geometry students are encouraged to participate in peer tutoring on Friday during Office Hours. Students are able to earn community service hours and contribute to the success of all Langston math students. Peer tutoring is a “win/win” for everyone involved and has been the most rewarding experience for me as a teacher.
This is contingent upon our schedule for 22/23.
Course Outline
Unit 1 – Transformation & Congruence
Unit 2 – Lines, Angles, and Triangles
Unit 3 – Quadrilaterals and Coordinate Proof
Unit 4 – Similarity
Unit 5 – Trigonometry
Unit 6 – Properties of Circles
Unit 7 – Measurement and Modeling in Two and Three Dimensions
Unit 8 – Probability
We will also review material from Algebra I and preview some ideas in Algebra II.
Students will also do “warm-ups” each day in class that will review – and possibly introduce – middle school math ideas that will be needed for high school. Students are responsible to keep up with this material and be prepared for quizzes based on this daily work.
Other Class Information
Students are expected to take care of school property and property belonging to others. Students are also expected to clean up any mess they have made and be responsible for their personal belongings.
Movies in the Classroom: Occasionally, our class may have the opportunity to watch movies during school; particularly during inside lunch. The movies that will be viewed may be PG rated. By initialing on the parent signature form that you are giving consent for your child to watch PG movies in my classroom.
